Holzlhuber, Franz, 1826-1898 / WHS / Robertstock, Carl Klaners Farm near Woodstock in Canada. From Holzlhubers journal: Mr. Klaner, who immigrated only in 1858 from Elberfeld to Canada, purchased the farm which I sketched here, and he looked after it with his wife, daughter and three sons. They were plagued, at the beginning, by the numerous rattlesnakes which had their nests mostly in the spongy and rotten tree trunks. Pigs are the biggest enemy of the rattlesnake; they search out the snakes everywhere and pursue them, and as soon as they catch one they eat it up immediately after mangling the dead body. The bite of a ratttlesnake is not harmful to the pigs, but human beings, as well as horses, cows and oxen, succumb irrevocably when bitten by one. For this reason I found amongst many farmers, and especially amongst those who still had small children, several pigs roamed around the house in order to chase away the rattlesnake and make them harmless.. This image is one of forty-two watercolor drawings from a sketchbook by Hoelzlhuber, documenting his trip to the US, especially to Wisconsin and Canada in 1856-1860. |
